Ring Roads in Kuala Lumpur

If you're living in Kuala Lumpur you may have heard about Inner Ring Road, Middle Ring Road 1 and Middle Ring Road 2. These roads form a circle from end to end, surrounding the city. In other countries, ring roads are known as beltways.

But how do they look on the map? I have waited to do this for a long time! After discovering about drawing routes with Google Maps, I have created this:

There are three main ring roads that serves Kuala Lumpur. While ring roads are actually schemes for transport planning, they are made up by individual roads with names:

Kuala Lumpur Inner Ring Road, IRR (Jalan Lingkaran Dalam Kuala Lumpur, JLD)
An urban and municipal ring road. The Bukit Bintang shopping precinct is located inside! The system is about 8.4 km long

Kuala Lumpur Middle Ring Road 1, MRR1 (Jalan Lingkaran Tengah 1 Kuala Lumpur, JLT1)
An urban and municipal ring road that forms the "boundary" of downtown Kuala Lumpur. Very busy during rush hour. Also known as Kuala Lumpur-Petaling Jaya Traffic Dispersal Scheme. It's about 18.5 km long

• Jalan Tun Razak
• Jalan Yew
• Jalan Sungai Besi

Kuala Lumpur Middle Ring Road 2, MRR2 (Jalan Lingkaran Tengah 2 Kuala Lumpur, JLT2)
A ring road consisting of a freeway and two tolled expressways. The freeway consists of Federal Route 28 and 54; tollways are Damansara-Puchong Expressway and part of Shah Alam Expressway. It connects places near the border of Federal Territory of KL and Selangor. This road is approximately 69 km.

When travelling on ring roads, you can state the direction of travel as clockwise or anti-clockwise (though you won't be using clockwise/anti-clockwise generally, but instead refer direction of travel as "destination-bound")

Went to a networking session by MINDS Malaysia at Royal Lake Club. Prawns cooked in turmeric powder is superb!

Biorefresher: Honours year and Eureka Skydeck88!

Biorefresher 1: Starting my Honours year


Boss (Professor David Vaux) loaned me this iMac so that I can work right away! Returned it to him after I got my laptop.


This is my Macbook Pro that accompanied me throughout my Honours year. Changed the wallpaper to Girl's Day to personalise my computer.

I started my Bachelor of Science (Honours) at the prestigious Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne, in the Cell Signalling and Cell Death division. Was under the tutelage of Professor David Vaux for my project.

Biorefresher 2: Visited Eureka Skydeck88



Made a trip to the viewing deck of Eureka Building in the hot summer, after finishing my Honours course. You can have a good bird eye, 360 degree view of Melbourne - definitely not a place to miss.

Biorefresher 3: I got my degree: Bachelor of Science (degree with Honours)



After all the hard work, I got an upgrade to my Bachelor's degree! Thanks University of Melbourne, thanks Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, thanks members of Professor David Vaux and Associate Professor John Silke's labs! Not forgetting my family who supported me for this extra year. It's all worth it.

The State Library of Victoria in Melbourne opens at 10 am everyday. A handful of people were queuing at the entrance for the door to be opened. I asked someone beside me: "Does this happens everyday?" Pretty much yes. While waiting in the sunny and chilly morning,


It's Melbourne Central in her characteristic woody finishing.

At the northern end of Melbourne CBD, it's 3 landmarks side by side: State Library, Melbourne Central Shopping Centre and QV Square. That's why I love the city.

Singapore Airlines A380 model

An aircraft model scaled to 1:200 is now sitting proudly in my living room.



On board a flight from Melbourne to Singapore in a Boeing 747-400, the in-flight entertainment system was down, affecting not only me but also a few seats near me. The airline compensated me with a cash voucher, so I bought an aircraft model with it.



Airbus A380 is currently the largest commercial jetliner in service. It can carry up to 800 people in an all economy class configuration.



Introduced in 2007, Singapore Airlines is the first to fly this whispering giant. The A380-800 is also the most fuel efficient passenger aircraft to date.



Singapore Airlines now operates flights to Melbourne, Sydney, Paris, London, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Zurich from Singapore Changi Airport with Airbus A380-800. Why Singapore Airlines? I am impressed with the hospitality and professionalism of their cabin crew for a pleasant journey. Not forgetting that you get to enjoy the best in-flight entertainment system when you fly with A380 by Singapore Airlines.

Off to Raub and back

Was off to Raub to visit my second aunt. Currently she owns the only bookshop in town that retails reference books to students.

She suffered from a fall about two months ago, but it doesn't seem to affect her much. She can still walk and remains enthusiastic for life.



What I like about her is that she has the heart of giving. Years ago, when I was in secondary school, she gave some secondary school reference books to me. I can still remember the title of the books are Eksplorasi Sains and Eksplorasi Matematik, those times the subjects of mathematics and science were taught in Malay.

Her only regret is that she didn't have much opportunity to receive education. Those times were not the same as today. Girls were often neglected and discriminated even in families. Knowing her position, she was willing to sacrifice her own gain for education and interceded with my grandfather to school my father.

Those times, things were sad. Financial position during those times did not permit schooling all of my family's children. Education for girls was even scorned by elderly members of my family. My grandfather was unwilling to school my father. It was these words from my aunt's mouth that changed his mind:

"If you're unwilling, I'll earn money through rubber tapping to provide for my brother's education."

Education was not free until the policy of free education for all citizens was legislated.

Had she received sufficient education, her position would have changed by now. Compared with the standard today of ubiquitous degree holders, I'm living in a better time, but am I really better off? As a person of my generation, I do not have the bragging right.

"Study all you can for now, and favour shall come upon you," those words touched my heart. There's no free lunch in the world, to lead a better life, you'd still have to pay.

An urban adventure in Melbie

After finishing Planetshakers morning service in East Melbourne why not take a stroll around the city? The air was cool, at the right ambience, spring temperature is my favourite. The Sun shone brightly, telling me to get active yet without being too harsh on me.

The other signature of spring time in Melbourne is heavy downpour. Sometimes, the city rains heavily without obvious signs of impending shower earlier during the day.

Yarra River (literally 'ever flowing') drains Melbourne and empties into its estuary at Victoria Harbour in Docklands. The CBD is located at the northern bank; on the southern bank lies a suburb called Southbank. What's the suburb name for CBD? No prize for guessing - it's Melbourne. The downtown with all of its suburbs is called the metropolitan area or greater city.

When viewed from Southbank, how does CBD looks like?


Rialto Tower, currently the second highest building in Melbourne.


A landmark and tourist attraction in town, the aquarium. I haven't visited this place!


The city is contained in the Hoddle Grid. Can you name the streets inside the grid?

What's in Melbourne Central Shopping Centre?


There was a Nintendo Wii roadshow at the atrium.

Was asked to try out a few games on Wii. They're engaging to play and I beat the promoter a few times in duels!

Stairs above the clock leads to Hoyts cinema. My favourite place for movies. Check it out on Tuesdays for discounts!

Melbourne Central may sound like a transport hub, but in real fact it's not! It's a shopping centre with a train station underneath. The train station is part of the underground rail loop that encircles the city.

Wonder how Southbank looks like? The tallest building in Melbourne grows there.

Fireworks during Fotoholics outing to Docklands

Welcome to part two of Fotoholics shoot at the waterfront suburb! Part one is here. I've also posted a fireworks preview post here.

The main purpose of the outing to Docklands is to shoot fireworks! Let the pictures do the talking.















This ends my first trip to take fireworks! I'm not using dSLR, just a point-and-shoot, though having a bigger gun will be cool! Comments and critiques are welcomed :)

Fotoholics outing to Melbourne Docklands

The next day after iPhone4 launch, I took part in an outing organised by photography club of my university to Docklands, a waterfront suburb just next to Melbourne CBD.

This outing kicked start my second semester of 2010 in the chilly winter.

There's somewhere in Docklands where a building was installed with reflective symbols. You get interesting effects when you shoot those symbols with flash!

Brighton Beach shoot

Some day last year, I took a train to Brighton Beach south of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia to watch the sunset.


Coastline of the beach.

The beach is walking distance from the train station. Along the eastern coast of Port Phillip, notable beaches are South Melbourne, St Kilda, Brighton and Sandringham. Unlike typical beaches, Brighton Beach features rough sand and shell debris.

CMG pre-production camp part 2 plus Healesville

Day 2

Highlight of the day were games, obstacle course, sketch presentation and campfire.

During the night, watched FIFA World Cup round of 16 match, Germany vs England. Remember the disallowed goal scored by England and the German counterattack after a free kick for England? That was a memorable match.

Experienced intense chest pain that night, so wasn't up for the second match. Had to rest to prepare for day 3. My health was screwed to the max.

Day 3

Woke up to a refreshing morning, my chest pain was cured. Air in the Yarra Valleys was unusually frigid, temperature estimated 1 deg celcius at the lowest. Heard reports from Melbourne that frost formed too!

This springy stuff look nice now but the surface was cold! Ice formed in the tiny pores, my socks wet after jumping XD

After all the hard work, we chilled at Healesville!

Moscato is a mild alcoholic drink, taste much like grape juice. Suits me well :)
