K-pop 101: Breaking Down the Idol Group System

In a K-POP group, you will most likely hear idols use terms such as Main Singer, Lead Rapper, or Visual to describe their duties as a member. But what does this all mean to us when we see our favorites in action? This is what I’m here to talk about in this article, so let’s start off with one of the most important bits of information to know: the difference between a Main and a Lead. To make it short and sweet, the Main is always the asset while the Lead follows and directly supports.

The main vocalists are usually in charge of singing in the chorus and the more difficult parts of the song; therefore they are usually the strongest and most prominent singers. A couple examples of Main Vocalists include Taeyeon and Jessica of SNSD. Lead vocalists, in turn, are the other strong singers who tend to have specific verses allotted to them. There isn’t a huge difference, but these members often sing a larger portion of the song in comparison to the Main Vocalists. This can be seen in Sunny, Seohyun and Tiffany’s cases. The main vocals are also known for having the best range and control, while the lead vocals come in second. Lead Vocalists are used as the support for the main, and act as the go-to when the Main isn’t able to perform.. These positions are often determined after training for a period of time and experimentation, due to the fact that the Main and Lead Vocalists should have voices that blend well together.

The same “Main versus Lead” concept applies when it comes to dance. There are Main Dancers and Lead Dancers, but it’s a bit easier to visually see the separation. The Lead Dancers are seen towards the front, especially in the chorus, and basically “lead” the dances. The Main Dancers are usually the people who get a specific part in the choreography and dance breaks, while the Leads act almost as backup dancers for the Main. Another interesting fact is that some dance formations sometimes set a few members towards the middle to make the group as a whole seem taller than average. A prime example of this concept is Hyoyeon versus Yoona, both from SNSD. As most fans know, Hyoyeon is praised as the dancing queen; however, she is usually placed towards the back. This is where taller members like Sooyoung come up front; these members act as Visuals and by doing so, this creates the illusion that the other members are more similar in height.

The final distinction between Main versus Lead is shown in the rapping positions, but doesn’t follow the same guidelines as the previous two descriptions; I’ll use Big Bang’s GD and TOP as the examples of this here. GD is the Main Rapper, and he usually gets more lines. On the other hand, TOP gets a few less lines and is the Lead, his raps following GD’s. This separation to me isn’t as difficult, but it’s not exactly the same concept; this is because there are Lead Rappers who have skills on par with the main, but they work more as a tag-team partner rather than a support. Therefore, they work together to come up with their own lyrics to fit the songs that they will be featured on.

So moving from the roles that have a Main versus a Lead; I’ll cover 3 other roles: the Leader, the Visual, and the Maknae. These roles aren’t as difficult to understand, but there can be confusion surrounding their contributions to the groups. I’m sure that there are plenty of people who wonder, “Where do they play in the grand scheme of things?”. Therefore, I shall begin with the pivotal role of being a Leader within the K-POP world.

In most teams, or groups in general, there is a Leader or representative of some sort. These people often demonstrate and give off an air of maturity, and take on responsibility for their fellow group mates.

When talking K-POP, people such as GD and CL, come to mind when we imagine a Leader. Most of the time, these people tend to be one of the older members, however this isn’t always the case due to things such as experience levels and attitude. The Leader acts as a spokesperson, whether it be talking in interviews or to higher-ups in their companies, which means that they have to know how to handle themselves in a reserved manner that will always leave a wonderful impression of the other members as well. Leaders are charismatic and kind people who will do their best to uphold the reputation and spirits of fans and fellow members alike.

The term “Visual” usually means an image that we can use to illustrate or accompany something; so the Visual in a K-POP group is usually someone with the face that we can relate to a said group. The aspects that make a person the perfect fit for the Visual role are dependent on the concept that the group would like to hold, but often times means that the person is quite attractive or has a distinct feature that sticks out in the best way possible. Siwon of Super Junior is an example of a Visual who is known for his body; which is apparent during the Mr. Simple era. There are also Visuals that stick out due to the “concept” , which can be seen through 2NE1 as a whole. There’s also the instance where a member is known for a “trademark”, such as Dara’s palm tree hair during “Lollipop” promotions. In summary, the Visuals are the members who act as the “face” or “eye candy” of a given group.

The final position that I’d like to teach about today would be the “Maknae”, or youngest member. It’s quite self-explanatory, but members in this position are usually expected to be youthful in appearance and in personality. Nonetheless, there can be an exception made here for the “Visual Maknaes”, or members who one would think are the youngest but aren’t exactly. Using Super Junior, most know that Kyuhyun is truly the youngest, but member Ryeowook is known as the “Visual Maknae”. In a way, the Maknae position is relative to that of a Visual member, and I’ll keep it short and sweet through this.

In closing, I’d like to leave a note by saying that things don’t always follow this model. Then again, when do things truly stick to a singular, universal pattern? I feel that this topic is something that has puzzled many fans though the years and I can say that it isn’t all too easy to grasp at all. My hopes with this article is that you as the reader are now able to see where numerous positions and terms come into place when you’re watching your favorite groups perform.

I'm actually very pissed over this incident for it affected my friends.

After offering "social experiment" as an excuse to his wrongdoing of posting underage girls, for which techie lightyoruichi has fiercely rebuked. In response to an open letter to him, he offered an "apology". It is clear that Serge Norguard/Dustyhawk/Lionel Goh remains unrepentant and has not been brought to his knees.

He made us reluctant and victimised guinea pigs. But no guinea pigs can take part in experiments more than once. Why not he tests his body against the law of the country? (以身试法）

I saw many comments voicing disapproving his act in his second post. This morning, not long after I woke up, I found out those comments disappeared, at least 70 in all.

This is his third blog entry to defend himself. I'm saving it here in case it has been deleted.

An Apology and Asking for Forgiveness while getting a few things off Our Chest

With the recent fiasco that had happen in the past week and after being challenged by Wesley Chang on Medium with An Open Letter to Duskyhawk aka Serge Norguard aka Lionel Goh, we as we have stated on twitter; we are here to apologize.

Now in the open letter, Wesley Chang mentioned this

Your Call to Action

Publicly issue an apology and reveal everything to the world. Let potential abusers know that there will be consequences. And such actions is not welcomed or condoned.
Privately issue an apology to all your victims, and suggest methods to help them prevent such things from ever happening again. Let them know how people like you can easily obtain their private photos and how to avoid it.

Volunteer yourself as the primary spokesperson for cyber civil rights. Speak against the violation of personal privacy and the ruinous consequences that ensue. Speak on behalf for the victims who have no voice in the matter, who wish only to be forgotten but are unable to. Speak against the abusers who you once represented, strike fear to the hearts of any potential abusers, and paint a vivid picture to them the consequences if they dare to consider doing it. Speak against cyber crimes and be part of the movement against wrongdoers.

Instead of collecting pictures of young girls, start collecting pictures of cyber criminals. Instead of taking pictures of girls, start taking picture of pedophiles. Create a blogspot for those people instead. Make sure these are the people who aren’t going to be forgotten instead, who will live in the internet forever.
You want to make a name for yourself. Now’s your chance. Use whatever left of your reputation and put it to good use. Who knows. You could even redeem yourself and see this is as your real calling.

This was taken from DeviantArt and was never stolen to begin with. Also there are other photos such as this. So to the person who wrote the letter and to the rest who thinks we use that nude photo without permission, the owner has already set the photo to be shared. From what we know is that model was 18 during the shoot.

There isn’t anything much we can do write now but apologize for all the things we did. We are truly sorry and though you may forgive us later on, we admit that the only crime that we did was curating and posting. Wait, isn’t that the same word?

For now, we do wonder on how we became a pedophile ? According to Wikipedia, Pedophilia is defined as

A medical diagnosis, pedophilia or paedophilia is a psychiatric disorder in persons 16 years of age or older typically characterized by a primary or exclusive sexual interest toward prepubescent children (generally age 11 years or younger, though specific diagnostic criteria for the disorder extends the cut-off point for prepubescence to age 13).

In our post here, we said and we admitted “Because of my confession that i love young girls”. Note that we did say that we love young girls and that was it. Never did we mention that we are sexually interested in them. Just because we say we love young girls or young kids doesn’t mean that we want to have sex with them and become pedophiles.

Simply put, should we be condemning a big brother who says he loves his younger sister? Or maybe an uncle who loves his young nieces? No right? So our question here is how did our declaration of love for children equates to us being a pedophile?

Somewhere down all this commotion we were also called a sex offender. Wait? Did we actually post a sexual act on that blog or here? Closest thing that was sexual was nudity and it was not a sexual act/pornography to begin with. We might be wrong in saying this but isn’t a sex offender defined as someone who has done a sexual act that is against the law such as rape, molestation, sexual harrassment and such?

What we have here? He's simply not repenting. Instead he created more places to post more inappropriate materials, which I can be wrong - it's harder to track down author of Tumblr blogs compared to Blogspot.

How am I going to believe him that those photos are from other blogs that he claimed? One of the Tumblr is approximately 1 month old, and the other two are less than 24 hours old (when I dived through the entries at 1 am, 29th November 2013). This is based on the age of the [oldest] entries, not the actual date of the blog getting started. To put you readers in a better perspective, I believe Sweet Young Malaysian Girls and Asians in Swimgerie were several months old.

He has not been taking photos from social media profiles, both public and private? This Facebook note has said what he has done.

The poster below simply immortalises him.


And since he claimed it as an "experiment", let himself be the subject of our experiment on him. Let us make him know what does it feel like to have most of the community as his enemy. Let him know what is it like to be "cut off from the people".

Two days ago, I heard about a scandal involving Serge Norguard/Dustyhawk being reported on The Star. At first, he denied it. But all evidences from my friends and a techie's solution point to him.

The screenshot below nails everything to the coffin. The blogs Sweet Young Malaysian Girls and Asians in Swimgerie are indeed his. He cannot run away from it.



So, I checked out his main blog, dustyhawk.net for something to read. Among his entries, I noticed a few posts titled "Intermission Babes". Why are those posts there remains a question.

The posts in Intermission Babes are just photos of girls taken from random sources. The photos are clearly not his. There was even a NSFW photo in one of the "Intermission Babes" entries. I had to cry a big "Ouch" when I saw what I didn't want to see.

I've seen Dustyhawk/Serge Norguard a few times, during the annual Cheer event and recently, in Nuffnang #LepakWithNuffies bloggers meet. I have always thought he is a respected figure in the blogosphere. I've even taken a few photos of him and posed with him (you can find them in my Instagram photos).

He may have a thing or two for young girls (not much to say about this but he can keep it to himself) but to share people's photos without their consent is just blatantly sick. He should be way better than me in blogging and yet ignores the most basic of blogger's ethics.

But since things have gotten to a point of no return, I can only pray that he pick himself up and start over from scratch.

Confucious has a well said quote: "Whatever that's not desired, don't do it onto others."

A Pink @ Mnet Asian Music Awards 2013, Hong Kong

A Pink mentioned about attending Mnet Asian Music Awards in Hong Kong. Something must be in store for them in the award show.

When the red carpet started, I sat in front of my computer and didn't leave my chair. When A Pink arrived, I was like having the moment of my life. Six of them came out of their vehicle in beautiful black evening dress.


They are stunningly gorgeous. Transcendental resplendence - the best word to describe such beauty.

Na Eun is my resplendent goddess. I don't have time to breathe looking at this.

The presenter announced the prize for Next Generation Global Star Award and it went to none other than A Pink. The name of the award itself is a great compliment to my favourite group! All the hard work have paid off. They had been working hard on their group and individual schedules. I'm so proud of them.

If you have been a longtime fan, A Pink is dubbed as "second SNSD"? I like the name of the award so much. It indicates their tremendous potential in K-pop and popularity among international fans.

Leader Chorong's acceptance speech reads, "Hello We're Apink. it's been a year since we've received the newcomers award last year and this year we are able to receive this such a huge award again i'm really thankful and we'll work even harder in the future. Thanks to everyone~"





Congratulations A Pink! I hope you all work hard to bring us joy. I'll forever be your Panda. A Pink, fighting!

Red Hong Yi: So I threw away my paintbrushes

Her TEDx Talk took place in June 2013 but the video was only uploaded a few days ago. I gave the actual talk a pass due to the prohibitive entrance fee :( but fret not, TED talk videos will surely be uploaded.

I met Red Hong Yi for the first time during the University of Melbourne Malaysian alumni annual dinner. There she shared her experiences of growing up during the Cultural Revolution and getting a job with an Australian firm, but getting posted to Shanghai. Not forgetting that she looks very cute too. She showed a video of herself drawing a potrait of Yao Ming, using a basketball. It came to me: There was a news feature in Sin Chew Daily about that the other day, so this must be her!


I asked her, "How do you get your inspiration to use objects as your tools?". Hong Yi's answer was: You need to force yourself to do it.

I said I wanted to become a scientist, at the same time I grew up with art. Ever since I was a kid, I'd scribble at any surface. I took art and music lessons during primary school. Perhaps it's time to awaken my artistic talent again. Her take home message for me: Just do it :)

Wong Zun Zen's "Understand Me" 了解我

After being a trainee for 1 year at least, my friend Wong Zun Zen has debuted at last! Her debut track is "Understand Me" 《了解我》.



For most part of the MV, I don't have any problem with Zun Zen as a singer but that doesn't mean I don't hold anything against this MV, just don't forget that I've been watching countless Korean MVs before this. I may sound a bit harsh here but that's the reality of competing internationally. The domestic market in Malaysia is considered small.

What I dislike about the MV:

1. I had to strain my eyes looking at the subtitles. Have the font bigger for it to be easier to read.
2. It's not hard to tell of the blatant signs of amateurism on the part of the videographer. The videographer of the MV seemed to have a lack of appreciation for "visual centre". Zun Zen has been out of focus for too many times, to a point of being intolerable.
3. Where's the guest rapper? I was wondering. He should appear in the MV unless there's a very good reason for him not to.

Zun Zen has a fairly decent debut in terms of song choice. Judging that she is a person of her time and country, she can thrive - though there are some challenges ahead.

KakaoTalk

Have you heard of the hottest talk in town, KakaoTalk? It's a chat program that originated from South Korea said to be used by a lot of K-pop celebrities.

Even before KakaoTalk arrived in Malaysia, I've downloaded the application out of curiosity, having it installed in my 3rd generation iPad. KakaoTalk for iOS is optimised for smaller screens but it's compatible with iPad, so I had no problem running it.

Using KakaoTalk is quite straightforward.

Before you began, you'll be asked to register for an account if you have none. Like most mobile chatting app, you'll be asked for a mobile phone number.



Once you've opened the app, you'll be led to the Friends tab. Your friends are listed in alphabetical order. There're two types of accounts available: normal and Plus friends (those with a P beside). I shall explain about Plus friends in the later part of the post.



By clicking on one of the friend you'll be led to the Mini Profile. That's my friend Vvens.
She has a special theme installed so you see stuff crayon drawing. Otherwise most profiles display default theme.



The second tab if of course... Chats! I've set my iPad to display in Chinese but the button layouts are pretty self explanatory.

Whenever a message is received, the software makes a "Katukkk" sound.



This is the chatting screen.



Press on the smiley face (on the left) to access all sorts of dynamic emoticons (called Stickers)...



... and use them in your chats.



You can have access to some other functions by pressing the ">" button. Or simply flip from the left



Now we come to the Find Friends screen. You can find friends by KakaoTalk ID or QR codes.
Do you see Plus Friends? They're celebrities' official KakaoTalk account to send you updates on their latest promotions and music comebacks. Or they belong to businesses to tell you about their latest promotions and discounts on their goods.



There are games to play if you fancy them. Sorry I don't usually play games :(

Interfaith relationship?

The situation above is best described as interracial infatuation rather than interracial/interfaith relationship. The video may be shallow, but has given us enough points to ponder. Out of all types of interfaith relationships, Islam draws the most controversy.

Under Malaysian law, any person who's marrying a Muslim must convert to Islam prior to marriage, regardless of male or female.

The harsh fact in Malaysia is, most Chinese refuse to have anything to do with Islam. Many are not open to marrying Malays. Religion can be the sole reason for rejection. Many Chinese families mount resistance should they ever find out their sons/daughters are in a relationship with a Malay. They'd choose to preserve their culture and belief from generation to generation.

The real culprit behind this is political Islam. In all Abrahamic faiths (Judaism, Christianity & Islam), not only the faiths provides guidance to believers but they exert political control over people in the Middle East throughout history. In the Scriptures of these religions, it's all about control over people if you are familiar with their contents.

There's little problem when the church is separated from the state. But not in Malaysia, the 'church' (mosque) remains under jurisdiction of the state. The Mosque is government backed, to make matters worse. Hence the contention shown in the video rears its ugly head.

I'm so excited to head towards Singapore! Aside from visiting the city, I'm stopping by at two of the nation's flagship universities: National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University for an appointment with professors. They're offering worthy postgraduate research projects worthy of consideration. Since it's hard to communicate by email, the professors ask me to drop by in Singapore to meet them at their respective labs!

I have sorted out my ticket, but what's missing?

While a transit ticket is enough for me to land in Singapore, I'll still need a few more things to get around the city-state smoothly and comfortably. Three essential items to get around Singapore are:


Singapore dollars.


A prepaid 3G SIM card, either SingTel or StarHub will do.


Ezlink smart card. You'll need this to pay for bus and MRT fares without having to wait in long queues.

Why can't I just keep my Malaysian SIM card and set my phone on roaming while I'm in Singapore? It can be one of the most unwise choice to make. Let me tell you why.

Although it's true that I can have my phone set to roaming in Singapore, it's actually not economical. While roaming overseas, you are charged exorbitantly for calls you made and receive on your phone. In my case my prepaid credit will dry up by just talking on my phone for a few minutes. For postpaid users it's a nightmare when the bill arrives.

If you use 3G data, I advise you to be careful of the data roaming feature in your smartphone. There're news report of users getting astronomical bills just by checking on Facebook or reading a few emails while overseas; getting a bill shock back home is the last thing anybody wants.

Before setting off overseas, make sure you disable data roaming in your smartphone. After you've obtained immigration clearance, buy a local SIM card and insert it into your phone. In this way, you won't accidentally burn up your wallet :)


If your phone is using micro-SIM, I strongly advise you to keep the remaining plastic just in case you need it.

As a very much Malaysian at heart having activities in Singapore, a dual SIM phone comes in handy. Whenever I cross the border, it saves me the trouble of changing SIM cards.


Thanks to Ninetology, I had a chance to experience a dual SIM device. This is how you insert SIM cards into the phone:


The first SIM card, inserted into the bottom slot, designated as Slot 1.


The second SIM card goes into Slot 2.

After powering on your phone, simply follow the instruction booklet that comes with your SIM to sign up for a 3G data plan. Now I can Tweet, Facebook, browse web pages, check-in Foursquare and view Google Maps when I'm lost, without worrying about cut throat data charges!

What is the most important feature of a dual SIM phone? I may sound a bit cheong hei, but I'm here to fulfil your curiosity before getting one! You can switch ON/OFF SIM card, turn on 3G data (separately for each SIM), turn ON/OFF roaming (separately), turn ON/OFF data roaming (separately) and setting the default SIM card for outgoing calls/SMS/video calls. All of these can be accessed from Settings > SIM management.



As far as the battery for U9X1 is concerned, it is equipped with a 2200 mAh Li-ion battery. mAh stands for miliAmpere-hour, a unit used for measuring electrical charges, it's SI derived unit being Ampere-second (Coulomb). Since 1 mAh equals 3.6 Coulomb, that equals to 2200*3.6 = 7920 Coulombs of electrical charges (when the battery is fully charged).

When it comes to multilinguality, Ninetology U9X1 supports display in Bahasa Melayu, Bahasa Indonesia, English, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese. Typing in English and Malay is supported in its native Android keyboard whereas Chinese typing is supported through a built-in Google Pinyin.

The Ninetology U9X1 enabled me to keep in touch with friends in Singapore without paying through my nose. It came in handy when a professor called me to give me directions to his lab & university (I'm so touched!).

In conclusion, if you're looking for a usable touchscreen, dual SIM smartphone without a hefty price tag (RM 1099), then the quad-core Ninetology U9X1 is for you. In terms of craftmanship, Ninetology still has a great room for improvement.

This device supports display in major languages of the world. When Chinese and Bahasa Malaysia are concerned, their input is supported via the native Android keyboard (without needing Google keyboards). All of these can be changed in Settings > Language and Inputs.

For satellite navigation, the phone specification lists GPS and GLONASS. I'm sure veryone is familiar with GPS. If you're wondering, GLONASS is just like GPS, operated by Russia. To date, both systems have full global coverage. You can also say that the phone makes use of both US and Russian satellites to determine its position on Earth. For driving navigation, you can make use of Waze or Google Maps, available from Google Play store. Not forgetting that its loud speaker makes navigation easy too!

Despite its sheer size, the Samsung Galaxy Mega is light and fits nicely into my palm.

Decoding Namewee's Tokok ep 019: Oppa Petrol Style

Namewee (real name Wee Meng Chee) has a word to say in response to the petrol price hike. But he did it differently this time - he spoke in an alien tongue to us! I was so taken aback with his acquisition of "Korean".

It's fairly easy to understand just by watching what he shows without the need to understand what he actually says. But if you're not Malaysian and don't know what actually happened, this is what he mean to say through the pictures:

Since the petrol price hike, the government is making our lives harder! Whatever fuel that's sold by Petronas, Shell, Caltex and Mobil, they're all raised by 20 cents. Aissshh! The Malaysian government is picking on us Chinese people, with the Chicken and Horse Screw messing up the government and think that they hold absolute power in the country. Really, all of you are sick! Do you want us to drink plain water, eat plain bread and ride on our bicycle so that you'll be satisfied with everything?! Aisssh, Aiish, then what do you want?! Before this you spent public money to bring Psy (Park Jae Sang) to Penang, where everyone enjoyed a free show; when election comes you gave so many goodies to people, furthermore you spent so much to bring Bangladeshi migrant workers to vote for you, only to raise the price of petrol to pay the bills after all these while? Is your dick bigger that we do? Certainly you can't do that to us. Aisssh, what do you want from us? Isn't it. Are these our fault? By doing this you only make crime pay. Aisssh! I'm really fed up with you...

I listened to Namewee's speech carefully and it led me to new findings! There're so many secrets to this video. I've even gone to extra mile of sharing the video to people that may know about Korean language. If you have been following Namewee since his early days, he is indeed famous for swearing in his videos to get his message across. By paying attention to his speech you'll notice these words:

Jenjang: A Korean swear word.

Shibal: That's a very bad Korean swear word.

Gae seki: That's also a Korean swear word.

Puniabo: Possibly a Hainanese swear word. From what I heard, Namewee has a Hainanese ancestry.

Gamsa hamnida: Korean word for "Thank you". Namewee was probably referring that the current Malaysian government ought to thank the Chinese people for their contribution. On the other hand, ruling party politicians that lose their seat in the 2013 General Election retorted that Chinese people "were not grateful". A majority of Chinese people has voted in favour of the opposition coalition during the election.

Kim Il-Sung, Pyeongyang, Kim Jong-Il: He's referring to transfer of power in North Korea and draws a parallel between North Korea and Malaysia. The current Prime Minister of Malaysia (Najib bin Abdul Razak) is the son of former Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak bin Hussein.

Namewee Tokok episode 19 is made up of random words with a few curse words, I believe. But since only few of us know about Korean profanities, he could largely get away.

In short, Namewee has voiced our grievance against the petrol price hike. Ask yourself again, what is Namewee famous for? =D

Malaysia: a nation left out

Good day readers. I finally get to head to Singapore for a short visit after five years! Was considering a postgraduate opportunities at Monash Sunway, but found out that I didn't really like it. Immediately I looked for projects in Singapore and found two that appealed to me.

I made the trip to Singapore to see professors!

So I bought train tickets to Johor Bahru. My meeting with professors took place on 30th of August so I bought tickets arriving on 29th to buy more time. To my dismay, a one way train journey took seven and a half hours from Kuala Lumpur to Johor Bahru.

Repeat after me, 7.5 hours from Kuala Lumpur to Johor Bahru/Singapore in the 21st century. That's a journey covering 400 km (not very far, actually). Going by the train speed, a trip to Bangkok can easily take 22 hours. That's downright unacceptable today. Judging by the standard 20 years ago, I wouldn't mind this train journey.

I regret to say that this is the level of service offered by our national railway company, Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad. The KTM Intercity service has existed for 30 years and there wasn't a single bit of improvement to cater growing needs and changing time.

The railway track from Gemas to Singapore still remains single tracked, severely limiting capacity. Isn't this supposed to be completed five years ago?

Malaysia as a nation is progressing at a pace too slow to be acceptable today. South Korea and Taiwan, less developed than us 50 years ago, has caught up and left us far behind in terms of development. This is akin to starting ahead in a race, but allowing other racers (whose starting lines lie behind us) to overtake simply because we don't run fast enough. The country has been mismanaged that progress is impeded.

The amount of foreign investments in Malaysia is less, but we had net outflow since the past few years. Where do I put my face when foreigners remark that Malaysia is a backward country only comparable to less developed areas of Africa?

Today marks the birthday of Jung Eun Ji 郑恩地 정은지, member and main vocalist of South Korean girl group A Pink. If you are a fan, don't forget to trend #HappyVirusEunji on Twitter to celebrate!



Pronounced in Mandarin Chinese her name is Zhèng Ēn Dì (Zheng4 En1 Di4). When I mention her in a conversation in Chinese my friends will immediately mock her name because it sounds like 'aunty'. Please please please okayyy, next time I hear you mocking her name I will KILL YOUUUUU muahahahahaha

Eun Ji is a very popular name for girls in South Korea. She was named Jung Hye Rim 郑慧林 at birth, but it was said that Jung Hye Rim was not good for her mother (you know all those feng shui reasons concerning names!), so she changed her name to Jung Eun Ji at secondary school.



As the main vocalist, she is a talented singer. I call her one of the best main vocalist around compared with other groups, because she's the only idol to sing the ad lib while dancing and smiles when hitting high notes!



She has dreamt of being a vocal trainer just like her mother. But she changed her direction to become an idol singer after she passed an audition for A Pink. Indeed she picked the right direction!

She only trained for 6 months prior to debut (Wow!!!!).



This Eun Ji is actually a tomboy by nature.



And hell, she amazed me with her acting skills in Reply 1997. Hearing that it was a sensation I spent my time marathoning the drama after I finished my Honours course. Her wins for Best OST (for the drama) in many music shows were well deserved!

She hails from Busan. After debut she kept her Busan accent (her company didn't ask her to correct it). Her accent was the bomb in the drama earning her the title of Satoori Idol. But as she took on roles that required speaking in the standard accent she worked her way hard through it.



Eun Ji is now 20 years old. Happy Birthday!
